The Detroit Lions attempted to address a major situation recently when they tried to bring in running back Ronnie Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles. It made sense for the team because Jahvid Best has recently suffered from concussion issues.
Brown also could benefit from a change of scenery from the most disappointing start in the league this season. He certainly hasn’t produced much with under forty yards on the ground for the entire season, but more carries could have gotten him into rhythm in the Motor City. Matthew Stafford and his downfield weapons would’ve also opened up some wide holes on the line for him.
Ronnie Brown hasn’t done much to signify that he should have been the second overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft out of Auburn. This fact does, however, prove that the running back has mountains of potential as he approaches thirty. The other side of the coin from an executive’s standpoint could be that it is foolish to take a chance on a player like this who has consistently not met expectations, and will probably not do so in the future either.
The Detroit Free Press reported that Jerome Harrison underwent surgery for his brain tumor on Friday. This is certainly the silver lining in the entire trade scenario. Without the necessary physical before the proposed transaction, Harrison would never have found out about the life threatening ailment. It is ironic that Mitch Albom happens to work in Detroit and cover the Lions.
The aforementioned writer is the guru of providing life lessons in the bestselling fiction sections of Barnes and Noble. Hopefully, he practices what he preaches and sits down with Harrison to provide some perspective. Michigan native and life coach Tony Dungy should also be involved in the situation. Emotions are running high throughout the entire scenario and it would be extremely easy for a man in the prime of his life to panic. The levity that Dungy and Albom could provide would be invaluable to Harrison and his family. It would also behoove him to have men like this counsel him because they are somewhat removed from him on a daily basis. That means that they will be objective in the analysis. Others more intimately associated with his life could have ulterior motives accompany their advice.
Some naysayers may come to the conclusion that the Lions have been put behind the eight ball because they not only didn’t acquire Ronnie Brown, but they also lost Harrison for an undetermined amount of time to deal with the tumor. I would make the argument that they possibly saved a man’s life and provided a serious source of inspiration in the process. His battling and perseverance can be a metaphor for the season and the city in general.
It is becoming increasingly difficult to make financial sense out of manufacturing big ticket items in our country. With the unstable situations in Greece and the EU, not to mention the health care crisis in our country, the solace provided by friends, faith, and family becomes a tremendous comfort.
