Dan Marino is widely regarded to be the best quarterback never to have won a Super Bowl. Last night, Tom Brady became the first to ever win five (like the old Saturday Night Live sketch “the 5 Timers Club”), breaking the tie he previously held with Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw.
Obviously, Brady is going to the Hall of Fame, and there’s a strong case that he’s the greatest of all time. Marino is often regarded to be the greatest of all time never to have won it all. Every single time an athlete, in any sport, is asked about what glory they would prefer to have- winning a championship or reaching the apex on an individual level, you know the answer…
…until now.
Every single time, it’s the yearbook answer, the party line. Well kudos to Dan Marino for breaking party ranks and telling it like it is. The Former CBS NFL Analyst and the most legendary figure in Miami Dolphins history was asked if he would rather keep his Hall of Fame jacket over a Super Bowl ring.
“No, I would not trade it,” he said while doing the Super Bowl talk show circuit.
“There’s a lot of guys that have played in the league, and won Super Bowls, but have only played for three or four years. For me to play for 17 years for the Dolphins, and the same community, it affected my life in a positive way. And to be an elite quarterback in the Hall of Fame is special.
“Obviously, you want to win a Super Bowl, and that’s the only feeling I really never had, is walking off Super Bowl Sunday night and not having that feeling that I was a champion. But I would not trade it.”
