In part two of our NBA Draft Stock Report: NCAA Tournament Edition, David takes a look at which players hurt their draft stock due to poor performances during the first weekend of the tourney.
Sherron Collins, PG, Kansas, Sr.
For a player whose strength has been his ability to step up at big moments and lead his team, Collins looked pretty awful in the Jayhawks’ shocking second round loss to Northern Iowa. He had five costly turnovers and was seriously pressing, trying to do much often resulting in poor shot selection. His senior season as a whole did not solidify his standing as a first round pick. Still, with a weak class of point guards, Collins should be a late first round pick even though several of weaknesses were displayed on Saturday.
Scottie Reynolds, PG, Villanova, Sr.
Reynolds would love to erase the final two weeks of his senior season from his memory. After a less than stellar performance in ‘Nova’s lone Big East Tournament game, Reynolds was broke in the big dance. He was a combined 4 of 26 from the field, 2-11 from deep. While those numbers shouldn’t effect his complete body of work in four years with the Wildcats, it re-affirmed scouts’ opinion that he lacks the ideal athleticism to be a first round pick and is too often a streak scorer like he was earlier in his collegiate career. I can’t imagine him being a first round pick after his opening weekend performance, but his intelligence as a floor leader should still earn him a second round pick.
Trevon Hughes, PG, Wisconsin, Sr.
The poor performances by senior points guards continued with Hughes who looked absolutely awful in the Badgers’ second round loss to Cornell. He turned the ball over six times and looked like he was forcing on offense and dragging on defense. Due to the weak point guard class, I have had Hughes in the second round of the my 2010 draft, but he is falling out in my next update.
James Anderson, SG, Oklahoma State, Jr.
Anderson announced he was declaring for the draft on Monday which is no shocker at all since he was the Big 12’s Player of the Year. He is a first round lock but a 3-12 shooting performance in the first round against Georgia Tech didn’t help his standing as possibly sneaking into the late lottery. Again, one game shouldn’t take away from an entire season, but Anderson just picked a bad setting to have an off-performance.
Luke Harangody, PF, Notre Dame, Sr.
Maybe he was still bothered by injury, but Harangody was a total non-factor in Notre Dame’s opening round loss to Old Dominion, scoring only four points (two of which came on a garbage bucket as time expired.) He has the work ethic and skills to still be a second round pick, but I would not be surprised he falls out of the top 60.
