Formerย NBA All-Star,ย Dan Roundfieldย has drowned while vacationing on the island of Arubaย with his wife and two grandchildren. Roundfield was 59-years old.
Roundfield was aiding his wife, who was struggling in the rough water, when he wasย swept away in a strong current. He was found by a rescue team that included the Coast Guard, fire fighters, police and a variety of other volunteers 90 minutes later. Roundfield had been trapped underwater by rocks. His heroic act was not in vain as his wife Bernie surived. She has been treated for shock and has been attended to by a social worker.
The Roundfields were regular visitors to Aruba, making nearly 20 trips. The swimming area is nicknamed “Baby Beach”. Bernie told the Associated Press,ย โWe always go to Baby Beach, and we go there because it’s so safe.โ
Roundfield, played as a center in the NBA and began his professional career withย Indiana. He would later play forย Atlanta, Detroit and Washington. He had a career average of 15.2 points per game.
Roundfield played in the 1980, 1981 and 1982 All-Star games as anย Atlanta Hawk.
