Skullcandy, Inc. (Nasdaq: SKUL) a lifestyle audio brand, announces the signing of Cleveland Cavaliers standout point guard Kyrie Irving. Kyrie will be joining a Skullcandy lineup that includes several NBA All Stars such as Kevin Durant Deron Williams, Kevin Durant and 2011 NBA MVP Derrick Rose.
“Kyrie is a major addition to the Skullcandy brand. Basketball has been a key focus of our brand over the last few years and adding a new, dynamic player of Kyrie’s caliber is ideal for us,” says Nate Morley, VP Marketing and Creative for Skullcandy. “We’re not only excited about what Kyrie does on the court, but even more so about the influence he has off the court. He loves music, grew up skateboarding and is very active on social media, which is a great way for us to connect with our audience. We couldn’t ask for a better suited ambassador.”
Skullcandy plans to integrate Kyrie into several brand initiatives—both that support basketball as well as those outside of it that offer a nice synergy with Irving’s personality and interests. Skullcandy is also committed to supporting initiatives that Kyrie is passionate about including youth basketball camps.
“I’ve been a fan of Skullcandy for a while now and I’ve been using their headphones all season long. Skullcandy is a high quality product that blends lifestyle and audio . “Also, I’m impressed with what the brand is doing in skateboarding. I grew up skateboarding and am really looking forward to the exciting things they have planned for me and some of their top skaters like Eric Koston.”
Cleveland selected Irving first overall in the 2011 NBA Draft following his freshman season at Duke. In his first season in the league, he led all rookies in scoring, averaging 18+ PPG, and free-throws, sinking 87% from the line. Kyrie earned MVP honors in the 2012 Rising Stars Challenge, and is a leading candidate to win the 2011-2012 NBA Rookie of the Year Award.
