Big, big time blow for the New Jersey Nets today. Fourth year center Brook Lopez fractured a metatarsal in his right foot and will have surgery tomorrow. Lopez was injured in the first half of Wednesday night’s preseason game against the New York Knicks. So even with a shortened to two game preseason, big injuries still happen in meaningless games.
Lopez’s injury usually has a 4-6 recovery period. As long as his convalescence suffers no major setbacks, he should in February, an injury like this is especially brutal in a lockout shortened season.
Until this year, Lopez has never missed an NBA game in his entire career.
Lopez averaged a career-high and team-best 20.4 points per game last season. In two preseason games against the Knicks, Lopez had 20 rebounds and looked like he would start getting the type of rebounding numbers you would expect from a man his size. Lopez was also talked about as the main piece in a blockbuster deal for Orlando Magic big man Dwight Howard. Guess that’s off!
