You know what a ridiculous homer and quirky public speaker Chicago White Sox announcer Hawk Harrelson is (see here). That’s not news. And you know how much vitriol he has for the umpires- this isn’t a breaking development either. (See this Joe West rant)
But today, he truly out-did himself in both categories. What happened today versus the Tampa Bay Rays is one of the most entertaining moments of his career. And truly emblematic of who he is.
Here’s a written synopsis of the gist of the rant via Awful Announcing. And then the video itself. As you’ll see it was pretty intense:
“Oh what are you doin??? He threw him out of the ball game??? You’ve got to be BLEEPIN me?? What in the hell are you doing? What are you doing Wegner??? You’ve gotta be kiddin me!! That is so bad that is absolutely brutal!! That is unbelievable!! I’ll tell ya what, they have got to start making guys be accountable, that is totally absurd. That just tells you… here’s an umpire in the American League that knows nothing about the game of baseball.”
So what truly happened to spark all this off? Well, you need proper context. The inning before, the Tampa pitcher plunked a Sox hitter, and didn’t receive even a warning. Then
Quintana got tossed in just his second major league start, as did Sox skipper Robin Ventura.
