Back in March, the Daily Mail made a claim that Liverpool FC are confident Mario Gotze will come to Anfield this summer, with the Bayern Munich midfielder having privately indicated he would like a reunion with Jurgen Klopp.
More Sunday backpage speculation on Gotze today, with today’s edition of the Mail indicating that “Liverpool are close to landing £20 million World Cup winner Mario Gotze.”
The Daily Star Sunday has a story on this too writing “Liverpool have offered to make Mario Gotze their highest-paid player in a bid to tempt him from Bayern Munich.”
Back in late March, Jurgen Klopp refused to comment on the Mario gotze narrative when it was brought up by the news media.
“We can talk about Matip or something else, but not Mario,” Klopp said on March 31st, before adding “I am happy that he put in a good performance yesterday. But there is nothing to add from my side. He’s a player with extraordinary abilities and wants to return to full fitness after four months on the sidelines.”
Klopp was referring to Joel Matip, who will join Liverpool on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund’s rivals Schalke next season. Klopp met with German reporters one week before the Europa League clash agaisnt his old club BVB, the Jurgen Klopp Derby if you will.
It was reported earlier this month that Klopp will get £100 million to spend on transfers this summer. In addition to Bayern Munich’s Mario Gotze, possible targets include Leicester’s teenage left-back Ben Chilwell, and a goalkeeper who can challenge Simon Mignolet according to the Daily Express.
