Erika Harold, an Urbana native, Illini and winner of 2003 Miss America, announced Tuesday she’s making a Republican primary challenge to Rep. Rodney Davis in Illinois. The University of Illinois and Harvard Law graduate is the second former Miss America crown to run for political office. In May, the 2000 winner Heather French Henry considered the U.S. Senate race in Kentucky, where she could be matched up versus Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. This is the same slot Ashley Judd was close to running for.
Erika Harold made her announcement in a video Tuesday.
From CNN:
Since receiving her law degree, Harold has worked as a lawyer in Illinois. She served on President George W. Bush’s “W Stands for Women” steering committee during his 2004 re-election bid, and spoke at that year’s Republican National Convention.
In Kentucky, French Henry said in early May that she was “not ready to confirm or deny” that she was considering a run against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Erika Harold has a very mixed ethnic background. On her father’s side, she has Greek, German and Welsh ancestry, and on her mother’s side, Native-American, African-American and Russian descent. Erika Harold is very socially and politically conservative. She has even adopted a platform of sexual abstinence.
