New Illinois football head coach Tim Beckman takes over for the fired Ron Zook. The rookie head coach (on a Big Ten level) from Toledo addressed the media yesterday (Here is the link to the 25 minute video) after a week at Camp Rantoul; the Illini train on the former Chanute air force base.
Here are some of the highlights of what he had to say
On trying to build depth in the program
“we’re not in the NFL we’re you can pick up somebody on waivers so it’s going to take a little while for depth to build up.”
On what players are ahead of the game so far, or look better so far in cam
“the Terry Hawthornes, Akeem Spences, Michael Buchanans, Johnathan Browns, Supo Sani, Glenn Foster, of course they’re ahead of the game as they’ve played a lot of Big Ten football. Of course there some comfort level there, but you never want to have too much a comfort level in football because that’s when problems arise.”
About Beckman’s college football coaching heritage
“You draw things from Marty Schottenhemier, from my Dad, from Coach Meyer, they’re all tied in, and that’s what you try to instill in the team.”
