Manchester United extended Michael Carrick another season, but they’re reportedly seeking a long term anchor for after he’s gone. Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic could be that holding midfielder, and he’s a great fit given that Jose Mourinho already has a history of good chemistry with him.
United are looking for a player of this variety who would then allow Mourinho to press Paul Pogba forward, and thus get the best return on investment possible from the world’s most expensive player.
ESPN FC reports that United are “closing in on a deal for Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic and could sign the Serbia international before the end of the week.”
This deal is the next domino set to fall once Chelsea land Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco, a move that is expected to be finished soon.
Conventional wisdom holds that Manchester United will be buying four new player this summer transfer window- a defender, striker, holding midfielder and a winger. On the striker front- the target is Alvaro Morata (here’s a link to the latest on that). In the back line, Victor Lindelof was the choice as he was the first acqusition completed this summer.
