Mexican Starlet Santiago Gimenez continues to light up the Eredivisie. His tally of 31 league goals in a calendar year is a new record. The goal against fellow title challengers PSV took the 22-year-old past previous record holder Luis Suarez.
If he has anywhere close to the ability of the legendary Uruguayan striker, he will be amongst the game’s elite attackers over the next few years. While the Eredivisie has a mixed record for exporting stickers, Gimenez has the attributes to thrive in any of Europe’s most significant leagues.
This impressive form has seen him linked to the biggest clubs across the continent. Tottenham are said to be highly keen on the Mexican and have sent scouts to Feyenoord games on several occasions. Fellow London clubs Chelsea and Arsenal are also rumoured to be planning for a potential move.
Real Madrid are another potential suitor for Gimenez. A January move to the European giant is a definite possibility, as he has previously stated his desire to play for Los Blancos. The Mexican striker recently appeared on the Spanish television programme La Sexta and said, ‘I would love to play for Real Madrid. Of course. It is a huge club. It would be fantastic.’
Real Madrid are currently behind Manchester City and Bayern Munich in the betting to win the Champions League with the big bookmakers. Singing Gimenez could make them the favourites, given Joselu is their current number nine. Jude Bellingham’s sensational form has covered for their failure to replace Karim Benzema, but a move for a frontman is likely to be their next priority.
In relation to a potential fee, Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano stated in his Daily Briefing, “Something in the region of £39 million could be the right fee to make it happen”. That would be a relatively reasonable fee, given the current absence of elite strikers in the game. This type of fee and the 22-year-old’s record of 38 goals in just 57 games for Feyenoord make him one of the most attractive options on the market.
