If you resent or dislike Real Madrid, then this season is the best of times for you. Real are off to an atrocious start this campaign, so much so that they had to sack their manager Julen Lopetegui. The search for a replacement isn’t exactly going swimmingly either.
One name the current reigning three time champions can cross off their list is Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine dismissed the credibility of the narrative linking with a move to Madrid by making a very clever dating analogy.
“It is like you are with your girlfriend or wife and you are holding hands, walking down Oxford Street,” Pochettino is quoted in The Guardian. “But because you are so handsome, another woman is looking at you. But your wife is so proud and, rather than worrying, she is so happy to be with you and falls more in love with you.”
The wife in Pochettino’s analogy is the Spurs squad, and it’s an allusion to all the contracts extended by the club this season, including Pochettino’s. While Spurs became the first team in Premier League history never to buy or sell a single player in the summer transfer window, they have locked down most of their key components for the long haul.
The latest to be added to the list is star midfielder Dele Alli; who became newly minted for the long term earlier this week. The England international signed a six year extension.
