On Tuesday night, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said his club must ensure that David de Gea, “the best goalkeeper in the world,” stays with the club long term.
Following a very dominant performance, in which the Spaniard registered a clean sheet versus Young Boys in a 1-0 win that clinched United’s place in the UEFA Champions League knockout round, Mourinho said that De Gea wants to stay put, and that his camp and the club are working on getting a deal in place.
While the long term deal is still being worked on, today saw United ensure their No. 1 will be in place for at least another season.
According to the Daily Mail, United triggered the one year club option in his deal today. That means his deal, which was set to expire next summer, now gets to extended until 2020. The activation of this option also means that European clubs will not be able to negotiate with De Gea come January 1.
It is thought that United will make De Gea the club’s highest paid player once the new deal finally gets done. In the eyes of many, if not most United supporters, the Madrid native is the team’s best and most valuable individual player.
De Gea, who has been with the club since moving over from Atletico Madrid in 2011, is reportedly a target of both Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.
