Frank de Boer was brutally slammed by Jose Mourinho today as “the worst manager in the history of the Premier League.” The Manchester United boss made the remarks today during his pre-Champions League news conference, in which he was joined by Michael Carrick (video embedded below).
Mourinho, who will lead United into the home leg of their UCL tie with Sevilla tomorrow, was hitting back a De Boer who said it was “a pity” for Marcus Rashford that Mourinho is his manager.
After Marcus Rashford bagged a brace in United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday, De Boer took aim at Mourinho.
“It is a pity that the manager is Mourinho. Rashford is an English player and you want to give him time and he may make mistakes, but Mourinho is not like that, he wants results,” Frank de Boer said.
“If he has one or two not good games, he puts him out. Marcus is very young and needs games, but he is so talented and you want to see him playing every week.”
De Boer is the owner of the shortest reign as manager in Premier League history. He opened the season as Crystal Palace boss, but was out after just four games, as his side failed to score or earn a point in any of them. To his credit, he did win a League Cup contest though. With facts and numbers like these at his disposal, you can guess what direction Mourinho was going to take with his response.
It’s never a good idea to get into a war for words with Jose Mourinho.
“I read something, some quote from the worst manager in the history of the Premier League, Frank de Boer, saying it was not good for Rashford to have a coach like me because the most important thing for me is to win,” Mourinho said.
“If he was coached by Frank he would lose because he lost every game. I try to give the best to the kid.
“I have to be honest and give the credit to the people of the academy that was responsible for his formation, to [former United boss] Louis van Gaal, who was responsible for his first season.
“But if you go to his numbers and how many matches he played with me last season and this, I would say probably he’s in the top five players with more matches in the two seasons.”
Boom! De Boer should have known to “not bring a knife to a gun fight;” proverbially.
