Jose Mourinho was in the house Thursday night to see Serbia beat Montenegro 2-0, but no, he wasn’t there for a love of UEFA Nations League group stage competition. Mourinho, reportedly feeling confident enough in his job status to start planning a January transfer window shopping spree.
On the list of targets are two Serbian Serie A stars, the first of which is Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The midfielder expressed his happiness that Mourinho was in the crowd to observe his skills and abilities, but cautioned against reading too much into it.
“I read a little bit everywhere he was here at the stadium to see me play, but that does not mean anything,” said Milinkovic-Savic.
“Maybe he was not here for me, but for someone else.”
According to the Daily Mail, that somebody else was Milinkovic-Savic’s Serbia teammate, “20-year-old centre back Nikola Milenkovic, who is in excellent form for Fiorentina after enjoying a good World Cup.”
La Nazione is claiming that United have in fact already submitted a bid of approximately $70 million (about £53.2m) to acquire his services. As for Milinkovic-Savic, he was widely reported to be a summer transfer target, but the two sides never actually came that close to hammering out a deal.
Mourinho went out of his way, on numerous occasions, to let it be known that he wasn’t happy with how his summer transfer window went. Perhaps he’ll get what he wants in January.
