Liverpool FC Manager Jurgen Klopp is pretty much a local deity in Merseyside these days. Last month, Liverpool Football Club did what they had to do to keep their demigod at Anfield for a very long time. In July, the Reds announced a long term deal for the German who arrived in October and replaced the sacked Brendan Rodgers.
They left out the specifics of the contract, but multiple outlets in Britain claim it’s a six year deal that will keep him in charge until 2022.
“We are very much at the beginning of our journey,” Jurgen Klopp said in a statement at the time. “but to already have the connection we have with this very special place is incredible.”
The 49-year-old is now underway in his second year at Anfield, and he says he can’t envision himself leading another club.
“I asked myself, ‘Where do I still want to work?’ rather than ‘What do I still want to win?’ and couldn’t think of many places. Do I want another club in Germany? No. In England? No. In Asia, Russia or the United Arab Emirates? No, no, no,” Klopp told Stern.
“And then I thought that I am already at the right club and why should I worry about how long I am here for. If I am at the end of my career has managed only three clubs, then at least they were great clubs.”
Klopp seems to be the perfect fit for what’s happening at Anfield, and his extremely Type A personality makes him endearing. Comedian and Liverpool superfan John Oliver described him, “a funny angry German.”
“He does not understand not doing things at full pace all the time,” Oliver said of Klopp.
Liverpool Principal Owner John Henry had this to say at the time that Klopp’s contract extension went official:
“The overriding motivation behind this decision is Jurgen’s commitment to overall improvement and development. In Jurgen, we have someone who is always looking ahead, always looking beyond his own wants and needs, and putting the club first.”
