After Manchester United edged out Young Boys 1-0 in yet another Old Trafford snooze fest, Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho declared his No. 1 David de Gea “the best goalkeeper in the world.”
The victory secured a place in the UEFA Champions League knockout round for United. Mourinho also said the Spanish international in goal, who will be out of contract in 2020, wants to stay put. De Gea, reportedly a target of both Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, certainly turned in a man of the match performance tonight against the Swiss side.
“He is a world-class player,” Mourinho said after De Gea registered a clean sheet in a match where yet again United had severe issues trying to score.
“He is the best goalkeeper in the world and if our ambitions are to be a big club, to be a winning club, you need the best goalkeeper in the world; and you need also some other players the best in the world. In this case, we have the best goalkeeper in the world and I know that he wants to stay.”
“I know that his agent is happy to do what the player wants and I also know that the board wants him to stay and they’re working on that, so hopefully sooner or later they arrive into good conclusions.”
While there are quite a few players who will be out of contract next year or the year after, De Gea is the one individual who United supporters will be monitoring the closest.
