Midfielder Marouane Fellaini underwent surgery in the hopes of repairing a knee injury he suffered Wednesday night in the loss at Tottenham Hotspur. The Belgian will now be out of action until the end of March. It’s the latest setback for Fellaini, who has certainly seen plenty of knee problems over the course of the season.
Manager Jose Mourinho made this revelation today after his side beat newly promoted club Huddersfield Town 2-0 today at home.
“He had surgery this morning. I don’t want to be very specific, I would prefer the doctor to give you some information officially,” Mourinho told a group of assembled media during his news conference.
“It’s not the end of his season, not at all. It’s a small intervention in his external meniscus and I want to believe that by the end of March he can be back.
“And if he can be back by the end of March, I hope we have a big April and a big May still to play in more than one competition.”
His injury/fitness situation could cast more doubt on his already uncertain future with the club. The big Belgian is out of contract at the end of the year, and there hasn’t been any progress to speak of regarding a possible extension. However, as made clear by Mourinho’s “shut up and sign” remarks (more on that at this link), he is very much wanted by the club and it seems like the two sides should be able to hammer something out before the end of the season.
