FC Barcelona are now within striking distance of achieving immortality, by finishing the La Liga season undefeated. Should they reach this milestone, they will become the first Spanish team to ever do so, and there are only three matches standing in the way of this triumph.
Barca just battled their arch-rivals Real Madrid to a draw over the weekend in an El Clasico that was filled with controversy. It also saw Cristiano Ronaldo get slightly injured, and miss the entire second half. He is expected to be match fit for the UEFA Champions League Final against Liverpool however.
Having taken a point from the Camp Nou meeting with the two time defending European champions, Barcelona have a very strong likelihood of finishing the year unblemished now. Madrid was considered the last true major hurdle or threat, but in elite European football, you just never know. The Catalan club have already achieved the league and the Copa del Rey title this season, but to mark a more prominent place in the history books, they must get past Villarreal, who they welcome to the Camp Nou on Wednesday night, and then Levante and Real Sociedad.
FC Barcelona will be huge favorites in all three of these matches, as no opponent in the triad is among the Spanish elite. Villarreal is sitxh having acquired 30 less points on the season than Barca. Levante Sociedad is way down in the last safety position of the table at 17th place while Real Sociedad is just 11th with 46 points.
Despite the fact that Barcelona have already achieved some silverware this season, they will not back down from the challenge of completing perfection.
Ernesto Valverde’s side has already set new records for the longest unbeaten run (42 games) in the history of La Liga, and for the most games unbeaten at the start of a season (35).
“This is a record the team now wants to go for,” says Lucas Digne. “It is important for us and we will give everything to hold on to it.”
The world will be watching to see if FC Barcelona can close the deal.
