Just six days until the summer transfer window closes and Chelsea FC have only added one player- Jorginho. If it were up to new manager Maurizio Sarri they would have had Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain too.
The 30-year-old Argentinian chose to go to AC Milan, and during his unveiling with his new club on Friday he explained why he didn’t end up Stamford Bridge bound. Sarri was apparently the only person at Roman Abramovich’s club that was interested in acquiring the forward.
“I have big respect for Sarri but he was the only one who wanted me at Chelsea,” Higuain said.
“Here at Milan everyone wanted me. That’s why I chose Milan. The motivation and conviction they showed at Milan was fundamental.”
Higuain joined Milan on an initial loan deal worth €18 million, with a €36m option to make the transfer a permanent one next year. Chelsea still have some unsettled questions in the strike force, as Alvaro Morata, the centre forward they acquired last summer from Real Madrid was essentially a bust during his first season in west London.
It’s possible that Olivier Giroud could end up the first team striker to start the season.
Obviously, the story of the summer transfer window involves Juventus, who by far (and we mean really far) made the biggest splash signing of the window in Cristiano Ronaldo. Higuain says he doesn’t have any regrets about missing the opportunity to play alongside CR7.
“I’ve played with (Ronaldo) before, but I have no regrets,” Higuain said.
“I’m excited about this new challenge, to be honest, and this is all that matters. I want to help get Milan as high as possible. I can only spend words of thanks to the Juventus fans. I had two beautiful years there and I can only thank them.”
