Chelsea team captain Gary Cahill said he was devastated to learn that Hull City midfielder Ryan Mason announced his retirement today. Mason suffered a fractured skull during a challenge on Cahill over a year ago, and didn’t even return to training until this past June. The former Tottenham midfielder said that he felt “lucky to be alive” after the encounter, which resulted in emergency surgery and then a week plus of hospitalization.
Mason had hoped to make a comeback, Tuesday saw him announce his retirement from football at the tender age of 26. The news hit Gary Cahill hard, who was obviously shaken by his role the development.
Devastated to hear today’s news from Ryan. Competing for a corner is something we’ve done thousands of times and to see those consequences for a top professional like Ryan is heartbreaking. Sending all my love to him and his family, and wishing him the best for the future.

Mason finishes his senior club career with 14 goals in 143 appearances. He also earned a cap with England in 2015.
