History has been made at Ashton Gate with Bristol City vanquishing Manchester United 2-1 tonight.
Only one lower league team (Bristol is in the Championship) has ever knocked out four top-flight sides in one League Cup campaign prior to today. The first was Sheffield Wednesday in 1990-91, who eliminated Derby, Coventry and Chelsea and then…in the tournament final…wait for it….Manchester United.
Thus, United was the fourth victim both times as Bristol City marches past them to the League Cup semifinals.

Here’s video of the game winner, scored by Korey Smith in the third minute of extra time.
Bristol City came into this one as 15/2 underdogs, and their shocking upset means that United will not retain the EFL Cup this season.

Here’s video of the first Bristol City goal, via Joe Bryan in the 51′. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would equalize in the 58′, on a free kick set up by a very controversial call of a foul on Paul Pogba.
United won possession 54%-46% and shots 19-11, but lost on the scoreboard where it mattered.
What a goal from Joe Bryan ?? – have to wake up now #mufc https://t.co/rgbuA9Bw0l
