It’s official- Arsenal have acquired FC Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez on loan; meaning he’ll be reunited with his former manager at Sevilla, Unai Emery, for at least the rest of the season. Arsenal’s securing a deal for the 25-year-old Spaniard comes on the second to last day of the January transfer window.
As we move into the final hours of the transfer window, it appears that the north London side’s other major target, Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic, will not be coming over to the Emirates. As part of the deal to go on loan, Suarez also extended his contract with Barcelona.
An official statement from Barca says that the Catalan club: “have reached an agreement for the extension of the player’s contract with the club, which ended on 30 June 2020, until 30 June 2021.”
“FC Barcelona have also agreed a loan deal for Suarez with Arsenal for the remainder of the 2018/19 season. The Premier League club will pay the player’s salary during this time and the agreement includes an option to buy.”
So there you have, Emery and company will have an option to potentially make this deal permanent, should Suarez flourish at his new team. While working under Emery in 2014-15 at Sevilla, which was also a loan deal, he made 47 appearances and scored six goals; including three scoring strikes in the nine times he featured in European competition.
In 71 appearances with Barca, Denis Suarez has scored eight goals and won five trophies.
