Yesterday, Vice President Joe Biden met the other VP: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays Vice President Selina Meyer on the HBO comedy “Veep.” Elaine from “Seinfeld” came to the White House Friday to have lunch with Joe Biden.
In the West Wing, “Elaine” took the opportunity to try out the vice president’s desk – the real one, not the mock on her set.
“I surprised him by sitting at his desk, so he thought he’d just ask my advice on various briefs he had to deal with,” Louis-Dreyfus said in an audio clip posted to the White House website. “I was happy to give him my advice, which he paid no attention to whatsoever.”
Louis-Dreyfus plays an ambitious but largely powerless No. 2 on her HBO show, which I find quite humorous. However, “Veep” has the same issue “Friday Night Lights” had, there’s only so far you can take a show with a niche audience. No matter how clever the writing, you’re limited.
Most of America is way too stupid to catch on and actually enjoy it. So you’ll get ratings, but only to a point. While the rest of America watches Katherine Webb go diving or dumbass Ryan Lochte opine on things. Of course, “Frasier” was as high-brow as it gets and that series was on the air forever; so maybe I’m completely full of it.
But “Veep” hasn’t gone unnoticed by Joe Biden. After Louis-Dreyfus won an Emmy award for her performance in the first season of “Veep,” Joe Biden called her to offer his congratulations.
And in 2008, when then Senator Joe Biden and President Barack Obama were running for office, Joe Biden and Louis-Dreyfus appeared together on NBC’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” where Biden plunged the actress into the pool of a dunk tank to raise money for breast cancer. The two then shared a soggy smooch through the bars of the dunk tank.
And you know what MUST happen when there’s a kiss on a television how?? The entire studio audience needs to go “WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!”
