The school has made it official. The earlier reports are now legit- Penn State took down the Joe Paterno statue. Official word was out by Sunday morning, but Friday morning reports had already surfaced. Here’s the skinny via NBC’s Pro Football Talk
Multiple reports Friday morning from former ESPN/CBS reporter Bonnie Bernstein and the NFL Network’s Kimberly Jones say that the statue will be coming down this weekend. Bernstein adds that the school’s Board of Trustees voted to take down the statue during a conference call Thursday night…Penn State Board member Capt. Ryan McCombie added ”We did no such thing” to Laura Nichols of Statecollege.com.
A grassroots organization dedicated on keeping the statue in place has sprung up; in response to a small plane flying over State College on Tuesday brandishing a banner that said “take down the statue or we will.”
Who “we” are remains a mystery.
