(Breaking: Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley and Vice President Gary Schultz will step down while they defend themselves on charges of perjury)
Very disturbing, scandalous and unhappy news out of Happy Valley today. The Penn State football team is on bye this week; but their program is making bigger headlines than on any given autumn Saturday.
Yesterday, it was announced that former Nittany Lions Defensive Coordinator Jerry Sandusky was indicted on charges that he sexually abused eight young men. He was arrested Saturday.
(BREAKING: Grand Jury Report released: What did Joe Paterno know? And when did he know it?)
Also, Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and Penn State vice president for finance and business Gary Schultz are expected to leave State College and go to the state capitol of Harrisburg on Monday. They are facing charges of perjury and failure to report under Pennsylvaniaโs child protective services law in connection with the investigation into the abuse allegations against Sandusky.
If even half of what the report on Sandusky says is true, he really is one sick, twisted pedophile.
According to USA Today:
Sandusky, who worked with at-risk children through his Second Mile organization, was charged with seven counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse; eight counts of corruption of minors, eight counts of endangering the welfare of a child, seven counts of indecent assault and other offenses. A preliminary hearing for Sandusky is scheduled for Wednesday.
Attorney General Linda Kelly called him “a sexual predator who used his position within the university and community to repeatedly prey on young boys.”
The grand jury identified eight young men who were targets of sexual advances or assaults by Sandusky from 1994 to 2009, prosecutors said.
Exactly what college football needs- more scandal. This particular offense goes all the way to the top in the school hierarchy, as evidence suggests the Athletic Director himself was complicit. If you’re wondering why Schultz, someone with a position focused mostly on fiscal matters is being indicated- well his responsibilities also include oversight of the University police department.
The list of charges against Jerry Sandusky is long and disturbing. Check out the link at USA Today posted above for more detail.
