Chicago Red Stars and USWNT forward Christen Press has something in common with one of her two favorite men’s teams. Both Press, and Chelsea have been “Simpsonized.” Press was one of just three U.S. Women’s National Team players, (the others were Alex Morgan and Abby Wambach) to be re-created in animated images as Simpsons characters.
Take a look:
Obviously, this was when Petr Cech was still on the team. The Blues guest starred in an episode of the transcendent and timeless animated series; which has been running since 1988. The three USWNT players were animated as a means of promoting the Women’s World Cup back in May.
“That was really funny, I was not expecting that, and the whole thing was very comical,” said Press.
The U.S. has unquestionably decided that Morgan will be and is the face of the franchise, but Christen Press is up there too. With Wambach now gone expect Press to receive even more marketing attention for Rio 2016, and quite possibly the next World Cup in 2019.
The World Cup is obviously a global tournament, and football/soccer is the world’s game. The biggest brand name teams reside in Europe, and Press’ two favorite men’s clubs are Chelsea and Real Madrid. She studied abroad in the Spanish capital her junior year of college where she attended a Los Blancos game and became a supporter ever since.
Chelsea came in second in a recent Daily Mirror poll which asked respondents who their most hated team in England was.
Like Chelsea, Press’ other favorite team, the Spanish giants from the Bernabeu, also inspire hate.
“There’s very few people that I talk to and they’re like ‘oh yeah, me too.’ Real Madrid is one of the most hated clubs. Them and Chelsea are my two favorite clubs.”
Press’ teammate for both club and country, Julie Johnston, is a fan of the other Spanish giant club, Barcelona.
While Christen Press ‘ chances of winning the NWSL scoring title this season are now pretty much over, she, along with Johnston, and the rest of their Red Stars teammates have a great chance of winning the National Women’s Soccer League championship this year.
