The Wisconsin Badgers Bo Ryan and the Michigan Wolverines John Beilein have been hammered in the national media in relation to the NCAA graduation transfer rule, a stipulation that allows a college basketball player to enroll at another school once his eligibility is exhausted, should he a.) enroll in graduate school b.) the new institution has the desired major, but the old school did not.
Here’s more opinion from another Big Ten coach. Matt Painter, head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers, doesn’t like it.
“I think the NCAA needs to change the rule on the guy graduating getting to go somewhere. Cuz they put that in as an academic rule and its yet to be used for one, it’s strictly a basketball one,” Painter said at Big Ten media day.
Later adding
“That is free agency. But with that being said I don’t wanna be a hypocrite, when some other school has called me I’ve listened, I left Southern Illinois to come here, and I know some people at Southern Illinois didn’t like that. So you got to be careful in this business.”
So Painter gave both sides of the issue, before adding that he is certainly not against all transfers.
“I don’t make a big deal about it, we’ve tried to take transfers, and I’ve tried to talk very few people out of transferring, a young guy I will if it’s an impulse,” he added.
