During the UEFA Champions League, English Premier League clubs put aside their differences and support one another in the European Cup. Or that’s at least what the party line is in media opportunities. Right now British clubs could use as much support as possible given how poor Champions League results have been.
Manchester United Manager Louis van Gaal says he knows whats behind these issues.
“It is always a struggle and a battle in England — and then you play in the Champions League in midweek.
“That’s the difference between all clubs in Europe and Premier League clubs. The difficulty is all these players are in a rat race. It takes a lot out of the players every week.
“That’s why you have to rotate [your squad]. That is what I do now, because I have to protect my players,” Van Gaal continued.
Chelsea is the only British club to make it to the final four in any of the previous three seasons. No British club made it past the round of 16 in 2014-15. If things don’t start turning around for English clubs in this regard, there’s even been talk that they could lose a slot in Europe’s greatest tournament.ย
