Jesse Lingard scored both the last goal of the Louis van Gaal era and the first of the Jose Mourinho regime at Manchester United. He achieved both at Wembley Stadium. Zlatan Ibrahimovic guaranteed victory in the Community Shield before the match, and he scored the decisive game winner to make it a reality.
United beat Leicester City 2-1 at the national stadium in London, and while most of the talk centered around Mourinho, Zlatan, and to a lesser extent Juan Mata, there is one overlooked contributor here. (Actually, the Paul Pogba signing was the real talk of the day, but that’s a different story for a different link)
Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, sacked the very same day that the Red Devils won the FA Cup.
Mourinho told BT Sport: “I want to dedicate this to eight people; for the seven people who were not selected — Ashley Young, Phil Jones, all of them — and also to Louis van Gaal. He won the FA Cup. Without him, we wouldn’t be here now celebrating.”
A class act by Mourinho. Acknowledging the Dutchman is a job well done. Over the weekend, Mourinho admitted that the adjustment from the LVG era will be difficult, and take some time. More on that idea and Mourinho’s quotes at this link.
